SONNENBERG, H. Medullary collecting-duct function in antidiuretic and in saltor water-diuretic rats. Am. J. Physiol. 226(3): 501-506. 1974.-Microcatheterization of the medullary collecting duct of adult rats was used to study the contribution of water, sodium, and potassium transport in this nephron segment to urinary excretion. In antidiuresis medullary reabsorption of fluid and sodium was 50/;, and 3y0 of filtered load, respectively. Animals chronically ingesting saline, followed by infusion at a rate comparable to prior voluntary intake, showed an increase in the absolute amount of water and Na delivered to the medullary duct system from the cortex of the experimental kidney. The absence of any further reabsorption of either substance resulted in diuresis and natriuresis. In rats on high water intake with subsequent infusion, an increased amount of water, but not sodium, was delivered to the medullary collecting duct. Essentially complete inhibition of further water reabsorption, associated with Na reabsorption as great as, or greater than, that during antidiuresis, resulted in excretion of a large volume of hypotonic urine. No net transport of potassium was found in the collecting duct either in antidiuresis or saline diuresis, -while in water diuresis net reabsorption was detectable. It is concluded that the medullary collecting duct is a major site for the regulation of urinary excretion of both salt and water.

Collecting duct function in deoxycorticosterone acetate-escaped, normal, and salt-deprived rats. Response to hypervolemia.
The microcatheterization technique was used to study reabsorption of fluid, sodium, and potassium in the medullary collecting duct in chronically deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-treated and salt-loaded rats, as well as in normal and chronically salt-deprived (NaD) rats, before and after infusion of donor blood (33% of estimated circulating volume). Before expansion, urinary sodium excretion ...
متن کاملThiazide induces water absorption in the inner medullary collecting duct of normal and Brattleboro rats.
The reduction of urinary volume after the use of thiazide in the treatment of diabetes insipidus (DI) is known as the "paradoxical effect." Since enhanced proximal solute and water reabsorption only partially account for the reduction in urinary volume, an additional diuretic effect on nephron terminal segments was postulated. Thus the aim of our work was to investigate the effect of hydrochlor...
متن کاملLong-term regulation of inner medullary collecting duct urea transport in rat.
Facilitated urea transport is regulated acutely by arginine vasopressin (AVP) and hyperosmolality in rat terminal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD). This study tested whether chronic diuresis or antidiuresis regulates facilitated urea transport. Basal and AVP-stimulated urea permeabilities (Purea) were measured in perfused IMCD subsegments. Rats were made: (1) diuretic by giving them sugar...

1. The functional capacity of Henle’s loop was examined during hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic extracellular fluid volume expansion. To eliminate a possible role of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in the alteration of free water excretion, rats with congenital diabetes insipidus were used. The infusion of hypotonic saline resulted in a progressive rise in free water clearance (CHzo) throughout th...

Using a microcatheterization technique, the contribution of the collecting duct to the renal response to extracellular fluid volume expansion was studied in anesthetized rats. During intravenous infusion of Ringer solution (0.25 ml/min per 100 g body wt), urinary excretion of fluid, sodium, and potassium was 365 mul/min per g kidney wt (V), 52.6 mueq/min per g kidney wt (UNaV), and 3.86 mueq/mi...
